What's Up With This Air Intake?

That is the engine of a 2010 Ford F150 with the 5.4L engine. Why would they put all those empty compartments in it? It's complicated and seems like it would increase intake air temps and rob power for no reason. Is there a reason for it? Here's the intake on the 6.2L in the 2011 F150 for comparison.

Kinja'd!!!

So what happened?

They are called helmholtz resonators, and they are placed on the intake tube to help quiet the intake down. The raptor has a different one because its a different engine. Different engines, different intake paths, and many other variables can count for intake noise which is why every intake has to have differently tuned resonators to mute the noise. This is why when you put a CAI on a car, you get that loud sucky sucky noise.

Ford didn't normally put the Hurricane in anything but the Raptor in 2011.

And you're a bastard for having the truck I want.

Thank you. I thought they were probably to keep it quiet, but I didn't know what they were called. Do they sap power? It seems like a great way to increase intake air temps.

They certainly don't help. I'd imagine they would cause a bit of a restriction, but this is all done because the consumer market wants even a chevy sonic to be as quiet, and well equipped as a cadillac cts. So we have automakers building cars that are so quiet, you don't even know they are running.

I'd rather live in an era where even the family station wagon packed a 390 4BBL V8 under the hood and sounded like hell on earth as it was taking 10 seconds to hit 60mph.

Pretty. I need the crew cab variant, however. Three kids.

There is actually a back seat on the supercab. It is possible to put a 2 adults behind 2 adults, as long as they aren't huge 6'+. The 4 door sure is roomy, though.

I have a crew cab F150 Lariat 4x4 now, and I couldn't imagine the carnage that would occur if the kids were in closer proximity to one another.

The performance decrease is pretty negligible, I think. I know that swapping stock resonated intake tubes for aftermarket smooth ones doesn't give more than ~3hp on a good day.

So would it be worth it to go with a CAI? They also claim fuel economy gains, and a small mpg increase on a 13 mpg truck would mean a lot.

I can't speak to the raptor specifically, but in my experience, CAI's and such are just for the sound. Many actually reduce efficiency, especially if they aren't properly shielded from engine heat.

I've put aftermarket intakes on three of my cars; WRX, STI, and the S4. All were forced induction. The WRX sounded cool and that was about it, the STI sounded cool and actually had some heat soak problems, as you could feel the engine lose power on hot days over time. The S4's intake is pretty well put together, and has a heat shield, so I haven't noticed any power loss, but if there's any improvement, I haven't noticed. Same with mileage.

I'd try asking on some raptor-specific forums. They'd be more likely to know how much of the marketing bullshit is real.

you might see like a 1-2 mpg increase, maybe. Its not like you'll be pushing 20mpg.

The helmholtz resonators don't harm anything other than noise. If you take those off with out going with an aftermarket intake you can actually harm your power. Don't expect any massive increase in power or fuel economy with a cool air intake. Oh and if you go offroading get a better filter than K&N.

That's still a 7-8% increase in fuel economy. A 1 mpg increase means an extra 30 miles of range, which is considerable offroad.

Most Raptor owners are, how do you say, image oriented? I just want to know if the damn things are worth looking into or not and I know there's a vast knowledge base here. You guys are fantastic.

I do think the sound is a large part of why people buy them. I'm not sure if putting one on a FI motor would do anything, though.

Filters are another thing I was looking into. Some say go dry, some say oiled is best. Any and all feedback would be great.

It definitely does. On a S/C car it brings out the whine, and on a turbo'd car you get all the whssssh's and fshoosh's.

I get what you mean about raptor owners. Trying to find info on STI's is the same way.

Well, the general consensus I've heard is that the performance/efficiency gains they may offer are negligible if not negative. I don't think intake temps are as critical when you don't have any sort of forced induction, since you aren't heating the air up by compressing it before it even gets into the cylinder. Hopefully someone else can provide more specific information.

Do you like cleaning your MAF? If yes go oiled, if no go dry. A high quality dry filter is all you need to keep the air clean, the oiled filters make a mess and can foul your sensors. plus the K&N ones done have as fine of a particulate filter as your basic cheap stock paper filter.

Thanks, I'm leaning dry. I don't think a MAF cleaning needs to go on my maintenance schedule.

Thanks. Whssssssh's and fshooshes add almost as much horsepower as stickers, or so I hear.

Right after the truck came out, the forums for it were great. All the guys on there were hardcore enthusiasts. Now, however, the truck has made it big with sales and now everyone is on there. Jalopnik came out with the frame scandal and now everyone wants to talk about frame braces. Ugh.

I don't know how other people are, but sound really improves the driving experience for me. Gear Whine is my crack.

I definitely see a lot of dude-bros driving them around the parking lot, but I have actually seen a few with banged up skid plates and covered in mud, so there's hope yet.

On N/A engines, it can be an issue in places that frequent over 100 degrees, especially if those places are at higher elevations, I believe.

I put a conical filter and a 45 degree elbow on my 328i, it sounds awesome. I don't run a heat shield since the engine fan is constantly blowing air at it. And yes, it did lower my intake temperature at idle.

the MAF only gets clogged when people put 15 gallons of oil on a filter and immediately put it back in a car. I've had a S&B oiled filter on my marauder for 5+ years now and never once have I fouled out the MAF.
